OMI-2T Probe Receiver
The OMP40-2 probe communicates using infrared optical transmission, requiring a direct line of sight (LOS) to the OMI-2T receiver at all times.
VMCsi Probe Tool and Probe Part Options - Mount Probe Receiver
Operating Range & Field of View
- Maximum transmission distance: 5 meters (16.4 ft).
- Optical field: 360° around the probe, but must stay within the performance envelope of the receiver.
- Mount the OMI-2T with the diode facing the spindle and ensure the probe window is clean and unobstructed.
- Natural reflections inside the machine can improve performance, but coolant and swarf on the probe or receiver can degrade it.
OMP40-2 Spindle Probe
VMCsi Probe Part Option - Set Up & Calibrate Spindle Probe
OMP40-2 Optical Machine Probe Manual
Stylus Runout Adjustment
- Load the OMP40-2 into the spindle.
- Mount a dial indicator to the table; contact the stylus tip.
- Rotate spindle by hand to check runout.
- Adjust lower four flat screws in opposing pairs to reduce runout.
- Adjust upper two pointed screws to fine-tune.
- Repeat lower & upper screw adjustments as needed.
- Target Calibration: ±0.0001"
Length Calibration (With or Without Tool)
Option A: No Calibration Tool
- Stack two 1-2-3 blocks (4" total height).
- Jog spindle down until blocks just don’t fit under stylus.
- Jog up slowly until blocks slide freely.
- Record the MZ1 value displayed—use this later as the Z reference.
Option B: Using Calibration Tool
- Press [T, S, M] → [Work offset] → Select offset (e.g., G54).
- Press [CYCLE START] to activate offset.
- Load calibration tool or create Tool 725 if not in list.
- Enter the calibration tool’s length and diameter based on its engraved markings.
Length Calibration Process
- Load OMP40-2 into the spindle and select Tool 710 (3D Probe).
- Go to [Meas. workp.] → [Calibrate probe].
- Press [Length].
- If using no calibration tool, enter the MZ1 value recorded earlier as the Z0 reference.
- If using a calibration tool, enter 0 as the Z0 reference.
- Jog probe to ~0.5" above 1-2-3 blocks.
- Press [CYCLE START] to begin length calibration.
- Repeat 3 times for consistency—ensure trigger points and values match.
Diameter Calibration
- Remove the 1-2-3 blocks from the worktable.
- Place the ring gauge near the center of the table.
- Secure the ring gauge using magnets, clamps, or other stable supports to prevent movement.
- JOG the spindle so the probe's stylus ball sits inside the center of the ring gauge, below the rim.
- Open the Calibrate: probe screen and press [Diameter].
- Enter the known inner diameter of the ring gauge into the ø input field.
- Press [CYCLE START] on the MCP.
- The probe will touch all inner sides of the ring gauge automatically to calculate its diameter.
OTS Tool Setter Probe
VMCsi Probe Tool Option - Set Up & Calibrate Tool Setting Probe
Stylus Leveling (Y & X Axis)
- Mount a .0001" dial indicator in the spindle, tip pointing down.
- Jog head so indicator contacts the top of the stylus.
Y Axis Leveling:
- Sweep across stylus left-to-right.
- Adjust two side set screws until within ±0.0001".
- Torque to 0.52–0.66 lbf-ft.
X Axis Leveling:
- Sweep across stylus front-to-back.
- To raise front: loosen Screw #2, adjust Screw #1.
- To lower front: loosen Screw #1, adjust Screw #2.
- Target calibration: ±0.0001".
- Torque both to 3.40–4.13 lbf-ft once level is set.
Z Reference & Calibration Tool Setup
If Not Factory-Set:
- Press [JOG] → [Machine] → [Act. values Machine].
- Open [Tool List], pick a slot outside of tools 1–24.
- Press [New tool] → [Spec. tool 700–900] → [725 – Calibrating Tool].
- Enter tool length (flange to tip + 0.25") and diameter.
Set Z Reference (if needed):
- Place Tool Setter Dial (2") on a 1-2-3 block (2") = 4" total height.
- Jog spindle base down until it just touches the dial.
- Press [Meas. tool] → [Calibrate fixed pt.].
- Enter 4.000" in the DZ field.
- Press [Calibrate], then [Back].
Calibrate OTS Stylus Location
- Load Calibration Tool into spindle manually.
- Jog tool to ~0.5" above stylus, centered in X and Y.
- Press [Meas. tool] → [Calibrate probe].
- Press [CYCLE START].
- Tool will automatically touch top and sides of stylus.
- After each run, record Machine Values and Trigger Points.
- Repeat 3 times to confirm consistency.
Change Tool Measuring Axis (Parameter 51784)
VMCsi - Changing Tool Probe Measuring Axis
TCsi Tool Setters
To initiate a probing cycle:
- I102.4 160 should be TRUE
- Q103.4 216 should be TRUE
- The light on the probe cube should be on.
If any of these are not correct the probing cycle will not work.
When the probe triggers the light on the probe cube will go out.
